If you're 21 or over, the minimum wage in Edinburgh is £12.71 an hour. It rises to £13.21 on 1 April 2027. The rate is the same right across the UK, so an Edinburgh employer pays no more by law than one in Dundee. The difference is rent. Edinburgh sits in the most expensive rental area in Scotland, and that eats the wage faster than anywhere else.

What Edinburgh jobs actually pay

Most Edinburgh jobs pay well above the legal floor. The earnings survey for April 2026 counts 387,000 employee jobs in the city. Across all of them, full and part time:

  • 1 in 10 pays less than £13.69 an hour.
  • 1 in 5 pays less than £15.18 an hour.
  • The middle job pays £22.26 an hour.
  • The middle full time job pays £44,574 a year, and full time workers who live in the city earn £43,272.

So Edinburgh is a well paid city with a long tail of low paid work underneath. If you want the wider picture, I've covered it in average salary Scotland.

The real Living Wage gap in Edinburgh

The is £14.10 an hour outside London. It's voluntary, and it's calculated from living costs rather than set by law. The gap to the legal minimum is £1.39 an hour, worth £2,710.50 a year on full time hours. In Edinburgh, that's 2.6 months of rent. The real Living Wage Scotland guide has more.

If you're paid less than the minimum wage

Your employer has to pay the rate for every hour you work. Watch for costs you pay out of your own pocket for the job, like a uniform or tools you aren't paid back for. GOV.UK says those come off your pay when checking the minimum wage, so they can take you under it. If the sums don't add up, raise it with your employer first. Then Acas gives free, confidential advice on 0300 123 1100, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and you can complain to HMRC, which enforces the minimum wage.
