Constituency MSPs and regional MSPs

The Scottish Parliament has 129 MSPs. 73 of them each represent one , a local area a bit like a Westminster seat. The other 56 are regional MSPs. Scotland is split into 8 regions and each one elects 7.

Your MSP is usually who people mean when they say “my MSP”. But the regional ones represent you just as much, and the Scottish Parliament says you can contact either type about anything it deals with. If your MSP doesn't get back to you, or you'd rather speak to someone from another party, pick one of the regional seven. You don't need to explain why.

Why there are two kinds

You get two votes at a Scottish Parliament election. The first picks your MSP. The second is for a party in your region, and the regional seats are shared out so the overall result is closer to how people voted. That's why your regional MSPs can come from different parties to your MSP.

The current MSPs were elected on 7 May 2026.
